Medicchu Akitsumaru Kai Review & Photo Gallery
Hello again everyone! We are back today with another Medicchu review. This time, we have the Hei Class Amphibious Assault Ship, Akitsumaru Kai! This pale skinned escort carrier is certainly one of the more unique ships not just to be made into a Medicchu figure but, also in the entire Kantai Collection fleet. She even sports a unique gimmick too! Unfortunately, I was not aware of that until after the review. But, before we get into that, let us first take a look at some basic information about Medicchu Akitsumaru.

Straight out of the box, Akitsumaru is a Medicchu figure with lots to offer and she is also one of the few fleet girls to be made in her Kai refit. Aside from her unique black outfit and cap, Akitsumaru also comes with tonnes of ship parts and additional accessories.

Just like Junyou, Akitsumaru too has a flight deck in the form of a scroll. The only difference is Akitsumaru's flight deck is slightly larger and revolves around her back as being a carrier is just one part of her multidisciplinary abilities.
Here is a closer look at the flight deck which curves all around Akitsumaru's back. Unfortunately, I am unable to read the writings on the scroll.
It is no surprise Akitsumaru is often mistaken for a ghost/vampire or, worse still, an Abyssal ship. With her pale complexion, Akitsumaru sets herself apart from the rest of the fleet even more and this feature too is faithfully reproduced in Medicchu form. Placed side to side with another Kancolle Medicchu and the difference in skin tone is immediately apparent. That aside, the quality control is superb with her facial expressions being spot on the large decals for her eyes applied without any problems.
Moving onto Akitsumaru's outfit, we have her trademark black outfit which sets her apart from the rest of the fleet. On top of that, her ship parts are in green which is another interesting feature. From the white stripes along her cuffs and skirt to the gold buttons, every little detail has been faithfully reproduced to an almost meticulous degree. The best part is, there are no visible paint spillages!
Akitsumaru carries a rotating lantern in her right hand and some paper with scripture written on it in her left hand. Way to reinforce the image of her being a ghost. A point which did impress me was how well the little accessories were detailed. While they may be decals which are applied on, the cleanness of it is undeniably a plus point.
Despite being small and, for the most part, covered away, Akitsumaru's ship parts are actually very well detailed. Individual turrets are molded and even parts of the bridge and smoke stacks are painted in gray. When you are going to pay 3,400 Yen for such a small figure, such little touches and details are almost a necessity. Fortunately, Phat Company delivers.
Now comes the part where I was not aware of while carrying out the photo shoot. You see, Akitsumaru's cap can actually be removed for an alternate look. You can check this out over in Good Smile's official page for Akitsumaru and it does change her look quite a bit. Fortunately, I will be revisiting the figure soon which will then allow me to update my review on her with the cap removed.
All in all, Akitsumaru Kai is what most of us would have come to expect from any Medicchu figure. Extremely high quality and attention to detail with a relatively high retail price. If you are an Akitsumaru fan, this figure is just the thing for you considering she hardly gets any at all. But, if you are just a fan of the series and am thinking of adding this to your collection, I would advise you wait for the re-sellers market for a better prize.
With that, comes the end to this review. For the next installment, we will taking a closer look at the fleet's very own idol. Who might that be? You probably already know. Until then, thank you so much for reading and have yourself a wonderful day ahead!
