What is Ishuzoku Reviewers?
Ishuzoku Reviewers or 'Interspecies Reviewers' is a Japanese anime series airing this season based on the manga of the same name. I ask the question of 'what is it' simply because I doubt many people know. Or maybe they do, considering the infamy of banning content so widely distributed on the internet.
Yes, this series has been banned by the likes of Funimation and even Amazon Prime because its content has been deemed too severe for the pre-pubescent children that will no doubt watch this for the abundance of engorged mammary glands and the euphoria from the symphony colloquially known as the 'hentai moan'.
Due to this drama and that of my own curiosity, I've had the pleasure (no pun intended) of reviewing this reviewing anime about reviewing anime girls. I've only watched around four episodes but I believe I can answer the simple question posed by the very title of this article. Just what the heck is this show?
In summary, several male characters try out prostitutes of different species (it's a fantasy world in case you didn't realise) and give them a review at the local tavern after their intense night of either pleasure or torture. The score scales from 1 to 10 and are colourfully written from the perspectives of each individual reviewer. So the human might love the great big breasts on the cowgirl (not 'yeehaw' but 'moo') but the halfling might prefer the petite (really tiny) form of the fairy girl. Either way, the reviews attract a crowd of people and their reviews are sought after by various establishments looking to snag a foothold in the business of the flesh. 'Comedy' ensues.
Honestly, I can see why the Western publishers pulled away because a nip slip deserves beheading while an actual beheading is as harmful as the slip of a nip. It's puzzling but hey, that's how it is. As for Japan, they've always been rather lackadaisical regarding these sorts of censorship and while there have been some talks about this particular anime, it usually bodes fine for the night owl viewing schedule. However even Tokyo MX, a prominent Japanese network, has since cancelled the series entirely leaving many to gape in astonishment. Even Japan!?
The show is definitely not for children. There are scenes with aggressive moans and rhythmic movement that borderline on the +18 market. Spending on carnal desires, interspecies fornication, only male customers; the allegories write themselves to be honest. But let's be real, none of the writing matters here because the reason this show got banned was simply due to humongous anime cow tits.
From what I can tell, the show is genuinely not just a hentai tryhard with some of the writing being rather smart and comedic. In fact, I'd say it's more of a world-building-slice-of-life-indulgence of the author than an actual crafted manga for its story or gags or material. The author enjoys exploring the possibility of this fantasy world within this carnal realism as we humans tend to see it. The actual sex takes up less than 5 minutes of each episode and it's only really there for the salivating fans that need such fanservice. Gotta sell that merch yo.
If you want to actually get off of something, I highly do not recommend this anime. It's less raunchy than the likes of Highschool DxD and Testament of Sister New Devil and even those are less raunchy than actual pornographic material, whether drawn or real. If you want a funny anime, this might tease you but it'll never truly make you tickle. If you want a slice of life anime, stick with the safe iyashikei. But if you have ever wondered how fantasy world brothels could be run or looking to world build on your upcoming adult isekai light novel, then this right here is the show you're looking for.
P.S. All images except the first one are unrelated to the actual anime.
