Figure Spotlight: Wave Super Sonico Swimsuit Version
Hello everyone and welcome back to Tiro Finale for a new segment called, The Figure Spotlight. As an off-shoot from the Figure Wishlist series, the figure spotlight series will cast the spotlight on figures that have yet to be announced and are still in development. Meanwhile, the Figure Wishlist series will focus on figures that have been officially announced and are available for pre-order.
The inspiration for this series came from a recent tweet by Tsuji Santa who revealed an upcoming Super Sonico swimsuit figure that is going to be made by Wave. Short of GSC's Racing Sonico and Emontoys' China Dress Sonico, the recent Sonico figures have left me wanting. Sure, they featured Sonico in some form of scantily clad outfits but, did little to differentiate themselves from the other Sonico figure on the market.
At first glance, the subject of today's spotlight may not be too different from the aforementioned bland Sonico figures. I was inclined to believe the same thing too. That was until I had a second take at this figure where all of its final details really start to pop out at you.Undoubtedly, the first thing which catches your attention when first seeing the figure is just how massive Sonico's bust is. In fact, this is likely much larger than her bust size is in most of her figures. Look past that though, and you will start to notice the finer details that are honestly, really noteworthy. From the general sculpt of Sonico's figures to the fabric stretching, everything is executed in this figure to a very high degree of execution. Especially noteworthy portions include Sonico's hair and the creases at her joints. These are traditionally portions where many scale figures struggle with and often make an effort to make as simple as possible. That is not the case here as every inch of this Sonico figure looks to have been given very careful attention towards. The final result is one very cohesive figure with every element being consistent with one another despite being a rather simple design on paper. Sonico's design itself was taken from an original illustration from Tsuji Santa. Hence, the comically large bust that she has, even by Sonico standards. Sticking so close to the source two dimensional material yet manipulating it so well to be a three dimensional design is something that many figure manufacturers struggle to do.It came to me as little surprise when I found out that this figure is manufacturer by the swimsuit figure experts themselves, Wave. Aside from the prototype pictures that we have so far, little has been announced of this figure otherwise. It is hard to judge scale from just looking at the pictures but, I would guess that it is a 1/7 scale figure. No word on release date or pricing for this figure. With just the unpainted model for reference, I would be keeping my eyes closely on this one to see how the final painted prototype will be. The source illustration has Sonico in a darker, tanned skin tone. It would be interesting to see how Wave tackles this aspect. If they are able to get the coloring and pricing right, I would very much strongly consider adding this to my Sonico collection. Until that time comes, thank you so much for reading and have yourself a wonderful day ahead!
