SPM Nero Claudius Review
Hello everyone and welcome back to Tiro Finale for a quick figure review. Recently, I had the opportunity to take a closer look at Sega's SPM Figure Nero Claudius and had planned to do a complete review of this prize figure. Unfortunately, there were some problems with my camera on that day and I only managed to extract a small number of pictures from the complete photo shoot. Nevertheless, I think it would still be worth the time to give you a quick rundown on what to expect from this Sega release especially if you are keen on adding her to your collection.
Released in June 2017, this Nero Claudius figure was released as part of Sega's SPM Series of prize figures. Primarily found in arcades and certain hobby stores, SPM Figures stand out for their larger scale and elaborate windowed boxes. As such, they tend to carry quite a bit of a premium over standard prize figures with Nero being even more so considering her elaborate design and size.
For the sake of simplicity, I have decided to break down this review a list of pros and cons of this particular figure to give you a better idea of what you would be getting into.Let us start with the pros, shall we?
- Scale - standing 220 mm tall, Nero strikes an imposing figure that could be easily mistaken for a premium scale figure when viewed from afar
- Colors - the bright red and regal golds of Nero's outfit really pops out which all work to contrast Nero's bright green eyes
- Detailing - from the braids in Nero's hair to the gold accents on her outfit, everything has been faithfully recreated for fans to enjoy
- Proportions - it is very hard to fault Nero's proportions here which neither look too exaggerated nor unrealistic
- Finer touches - the translucent dress, huge sword and ahoge (idiot hair) are all signature features of Nero that fans will appreciate
- Huge sword - Nero's personal favorite sword, Original Fire, is equally as imposing as the figure itself with a length greater than Nero herself
Cons:
- Glossy skin - one of the cardinal sins of Sega's prize figures are their glossy skin making them appear much too shiny. I usually justify this as a cost saving measure
- Finishing - while the detailing and colors are spot on, the finishing is still a little rough and uneven. It leaves something to be desired when compared to the likes of FuRyu
- Price - retail prices hover around 2,500 - 3,000 Yen due to the large size of the figure
- Size - while imposing, this may also be a downside for those with limited display space
- Base - a plain black base with little to impress upon
All in all, Sega's SPM Nero Claudius marks an improvement in the SPM series of prize figures by Sega as they have improved upon their detailing and painting accuracy markedly when compared to their past efforts. That being said, the glossy finish for Nero's skin is still a very jarring issue that plagues the illusion of realism in the figure. It is not so much of an issue when viewed from afar but, shines uncontrollably when confronted by any light source. For Nero fans, I would say that this is worth getting granted you have the space for her and find her at a good price.
With that, we have come to the end of this review. Once again, I do apologize for the lack of photographs. If you have any questions or opinions, do leave them in the comments section below. Until the next time, thank you so much for reading and have yourself a wonderful day ahead!
