Why the Hell Are You Here, Teacher?! Volume 2 Review
Hello everyone and welcome back to Tiro Finale for another manga review. This time, we will be taking a look at Soborou's hit series, Why The Hell Are You Here, Teacher?! as we review the second volume of this now long standing ecchi series. If you have not read the series before, the premise itself is pretty simple - student unexpectedly finds his attractive teacher in all sorts of compromising scenarios with ensuing trouble. What makes this series really stand out though, it its execution as we have pointed on in our review of the first volume of this series.
Just like the first volume, the second volume comprises of 10 chapters covering an entire arc of a student-teacher combo. Unlike the first volume, this comes included with two additional omake chapters now dubbed as the, Extracurricular Bonus Manga. As usual, the entire second volume was read on the BookWalker app on iOS using an iPad Pro, my preferred mode of reading manga these days. Without further ado, let us jump right into the review.
The first chapter, One Hot Mother, serves as an introduction to the main characters for this teacher-duo arc. The teacher in question is Matsukaze Maya-sensei, a motherly and caring teacher beloved by all her students. While the student is Suzuki Rin, a second year student, who because of his scary looks and large build is often mistaken as a delinquent-type student despite his actual friendly nature. The story of the second volume takes place shortly after the first and is even set in the same school, Kawanuma West High School.
Unlike the first volume though, Soborou wastes no time in turning up the ecchi factor to eleven with nudity present even in the first chapter of this second volume. So do consider yourself warned in the event you are planning to read this in a less than private environment. Nudity aside, the second volume gets off to a flying start by immediately establishing the dynamics between the two. In this case, it is Matsukaze-sensei who is head over heels for her student, as will be explained later in the manga.
It would certainly not be Why The Hell Are You Here, Teacher?! without a few compromising scenarios which then prompt the title's aforementioned questions. The second chapter, Cramming In, plays on the age old trope of the delinquent student preying on his helpless teacher in a crowded train. Only this time, things are somewhat flipped as Suzuki tries his very best to protect her. This chapter highlights Soboru's mastery in illustrating confined spaces and obscure angles. These really help to lend a unique look to the manga especially if it is the first time you are reading it. Moreover, the consistency in art is also a clear step up compared to the first volume with Matsukaze-sensei looking much the same throughout the entire volume.
Readers are then reunited with Kojima-sensei and Sato as the school heads outdoors to help clean their local park in, Sit "n" Spin. Despite the reunion of characters, the second chapter in the second volume does fall rather short in terms of its scenario. Fortunately, it does redeem itself in the form of an absolutely adorable and comical panel of Matsukaze-sensei towards the end of the chapter.
Of course, Kojima-sensei and Sato are not relegated to simple cameos as they are actually the main characters for the fourth chapter, Synced Up. I suppose there are only so many compromising scenarios one can come up with in a public park as this chapter too plays on a similar concept to the one before it. By and large, it is rather forgettable except for this one very memorable panel towards the end of the chapter which is my personal favorite of the entire volume.
With character development having taken a back seat in the past two chapters, readers are once again brought up to speed in the fifth chapter, Ready to Get Wet?, via the introduction of new side characters. Namely Suzuki's two younger siblings who help to expand upon his personality and traits even further. Just like the first volume, the introduction of side characters really help to expand upon the relationship dynamics as it illustrates how each of our main characters react in the presence of others especially, someone as close as family members. In fact, the fifth chapter also ends with an introduction to yet another side character from the side of Matsukaze-sensei which certainly fuels the story forward at a healthy pace.
The sixth chapter, Staying Focused, takes a slight detour as Matsukaze-sensei and Suzuki visit a water park together. Joining them is Kojima-sensei and Sato but, they take much more of a background role this time around with little to no interaction with our main duo. Suzuki's goal is to teach Matsukaze-sensei how to swim properly but, in usual Why the Hell Are You Here, Teacher?! fashion, things go awfully wrong. Fortunately, the straight laced, albeit a little dense, Suzuki is able to keep things intact resulting in one of the funnier chapters of the entire volume.
Another member of the Matsukaze household makes an appearance in the seventh chapter, High-School Delusions. Matsukaze Saya is the younger sister of Matsukaze-sensei who also happens to be a distinguished member of the Kawanuma West High School. Unlike her older sister, Saya is calm and collected, often acting as the more mature one of the two siblings thus, having to look out for her older sister. So much so that she even plays a major role in the next two chapters.
By the eighth chapter, Good, Clean Vibrations, Suzuki is now fully acquainted with the Matsukaze househould and Matsukaze-sensei could not be happier about it. Understandably, Saya is not quite as enthused as her love-struck sister and remains vigilant and suspicious of Suzuki. More than just the usual caring or flustered Matsukaze-sensei that we have seen in the earlier chapters, we now get to see the more enthusiastic side of her as she tries to impress Suzuki.
Even by the ninth chapter, Squeeeeze!, Saya remains highly suspicious of Suzuki despite starting to see through his intimidating physique and view him for the kind soul that he is. The entirety of the ninth chapter plays out in the school's art room of which Matsukaze-sensei is a teacher of. Saya may be playing the foil of these two for now but, several volumes from now, she would eventually be experiencing these moments herself too. More of that and more in future review of Why the Hell Are You Here, Teacher?!
Aside from the ten chapters of the original Matsukaze-Suzuki arc, the complete second volume also comes included with two bonus chapters. Both are very risque and serve more as fan service material as opposed to progressing the plot in any ways. The first extracurricular bonus chapter features Kojima-sensei and Sato while, the second features the trio of the Matsukaze sisters and Suzuki.
Overall, Soborou's second outing with a new teacher-student combo is an absolute success with pacing and writing formula than works even better compared to that of the first volume. Moreover, the highly detailed art work always make the series a treat to read. Only this time, things are even more polished with more consistent character designs. The strong surrounding cast of side characters only serve to emphasize the relationship dynamics between our two main characters. Things never feel too forced or artificial nor do things progress at an unnatural pace either. If there was only one let down I had, it would be the lack of a solid conclusion by the end of the second volume. Yet that is all to build up towards the third volume where the story of these two continue together with the introduction of a whole new teacher-student duo.
Rest assured, I will be planning to review the third volume of Why the Hell Are You Here, Teacher?! in the near future. In the meantime, if you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask them in the comments section below. I would love to hear what you have to think. Until the next time, thank you so much for reading and have yourself a wonderful day ahead!
